🌿 10 Steps to Help Overcome Grief
By Rhonda, Hopeful Havens
Grief has a way of showing up uninvited. It doesn’t follow a schedule, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a relationship, a dream, or a season of life — grief changes you. But healing is possible. God promises to be close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and that promise is for you.
Here are 10 steps to help you begin to heal — one day, one prayer, one breath at a time
Allow Yourself to Feel
Don’t rush the pain away. Let yourself cry, grieve, and sit with your emotions. Healing begins when you stop pretending you’re okay and start being honest about what hurts.
Lean on God’s Strength
There will be days when your own strength runs out — and that’s okay. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. Pray, even if all you can say is, “Lord, help me through this.”
Reach Out for Support
You don’t have to carry this alone. Talk with trusted friends, family, or a grief support group. Sharing your pain lightens the load, and sometimes, healing comes through connection.
Create a Daily Routine
Structure can bring peace in chaos. Try to wake up, eat, walk, and rest at similar times each day. Simple routines help ground you when everything else feels uncertain.
Find Ways to Remember
Honor the memory of what you’ve lost. Create a photo album, plant a tree, write a letter, or light a candle. Remembering keeps love alive — it’s part of the healing process.
Express Your Feelings Creatively
Journaling, painting, writing, or music can help release emotions that words can’t. Hopeful Havens was born out of this same idea — that beauty can grow even from brokenness.
Take Care of Your Body
Grief affects your physical health. Try to rest, eat nourishing foods, and move your body. Healing your body supports the healing of your heart.
Avoid Isolation
It’s tempting to withdraw when you’re hurting. But isolation deepens the ache. Allow others to walk with you — even in silence. Love is a light that breaks through the darkness.
Give Yourself Grace
Some days will feel like progress, others will feel like starting over. Be gentle with yourself. Healing isn’t linear — it’s layered, just like your love for who or what you’ve lost.
Hold Onto Hope
Grief may change your story, but it doesn’t erase your purpose. Let this season soften you, not harden you. Hope lives on, even when it feels quiet. One day, you’ll look back and see how far God has carried you.
💛 Final Thought:
Grief doesn’t end — it transforms. The pain becomes a part of your story, but so does the strength, the faith, and the love that never dies.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3
